In honor of Bettie Page Bettie Page was the first woman I ever saw actually enjoying being nude. Before her, female nudes were either 'art' in which the woman's body was treated as an inanimate sculpture and her face obscured or ignored, or they were dark, seedy, very graphic images that depicted women in various degrees of fake sexual pleasure. Not until the miraculous Bettie Page came along could a woman happily romp around completely nude in the sunlight without a care in the world. It is that vision of women and their beauty that continues to inspire us at Body in Mind to this day - women in full gloriously happy possession of their faculties, their bodies, and their beauty. No one will ever do it better than Bettie, and like Marilyn Monroe and Anna Nicole Smith, there will never be another one. Her death is a reason for great sadness, but her images are one of mankind's greatest monuments to human freedom and happiness. We'll miss you Bettie, and we dedicate this gallery of Zuzana done in her style, to her.

Jake was dying. His wife sat at the bedside. He looked up and said weakly:
"I have something I must confess."
"There's no need to," his wife replied.
"No," he insisted, "I want to die in peace."
"I slept with your sister, your best friend, her best friend,
and your mother!"
"I know," she replied, "now just rest and let the poison work."
This was a big year for women: The first serious female presidential candidate, the first predominately female state senate, the first female Top Chef. Yet the advertising world has not caught up to the advances of half our population and continues to use stereotypes and violence to prey on our most vile desires. Here are the worst of them - the trends that won't die despite our cultural outrage, and personal boredom.
BONDAGE - This year Remy Martin debuted it's "things are getting interesting" campaign that features a mediocre Website and a series of billboards/magazine spreads depicting women in degrading bondage positions. You may think, "hey this one shows two women, there aren't even men involved, how can it be sexist?" But most of the ads (not available online) have men between the two women in controlling positions. And even without that, these women are obviously putting on a show for an outsider, not having a passionate lesbian love affair for themselves. These types of ads gain traction in cultural periods of female advancement-capturing the fantasy of "putting us back where we belong." Read on >>
